PASTOR’S COLUMN

“A Season of Kairos

During these past few Sundays, I’ve been preaching about kairos moments. Kairos is a Greek word used in the New Testament to signify not chronological time, but an opportune or right time. One could say that in the Bible, kairos is the term used for God’s time, a decisive time ushering the in-breaking of God’s presence into our lives and our world.

I feel that Farmville Baptist Church is entering a season of kairos time. First and foremost, I’m excited that, after a long hiatus, we are planning a summer mission trip to the eastern shores of Virginia on July 8 through 13. We are partnering with Habitat for Humanity that week to help build a Habitat home. We are looking to send a group of around fifteen people who are older than sixteen years of age (Habitat’s age limit). There will be an informational meeting on Sunday, February 19, after worship, and I encourage anyone who is interested in this project to attend.

Secondly, I anticipate a season of kairos as Jay Lynn continues to consult with us to help us discern where God is leading the church in its vision, purpose and mission. A series of discussion meetings and surveys are being planned right now, both for the congregation and for our community. I encourage all our members to participate in this process so that we will more clearly see God’s in-breaking vision for Farmville Baptist.

Thirdly, on February 5 in worship, we will celebrate Mc Amoss’ twentieth anniversary as our church organist! What a gift and treasure Mc is to our congregation! For two decades, week in and week out, Mc has blessed us with his gifts by leading our worship through music. So, on February 5, we are not only acknowledging the chronological time of Mc’s service, but also the kairos time, the opportune time ,to express our thanks and appreciation to God for Mc’s ministry among us.

Fourthly, on February 5, Joyce Davis will be our worship speaker. Joyce has been a member of Farmville Baptist for fifty-seven years (she was baptized into membership at a young age!), and she will share what God is teaching her about the promises and faithfulness of God. What an opportune time to hear from Joyce and for us as a church to affirm the promises and faithfulness of God!

“The kairos time has come, and Kingdom of God is near!” said Jesus. That was true over two thousand years ago when Jesus was beginning his earthly ministry, and that is just as true today here at Farmville Baptist!

Yours in Christ, Michael

ANNOUNCEMENTS

February 5 is the official “Souper Bowl of Caring” day.

Our youth will collect monetary and food donations for FACES, our local food pantry at the end of our worship service that day. Please come to worship with cash or non-perishable food items to support this cause!

Ash Wednesday Service

Lent is a forty-day period in our church calendar that is set aside for reflection and repentance. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. For contemporary Christians, this is a season for prayer, penitence, and preparation for Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty days before Easter (excluding Sundays). Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance and as a reminder of our mortality.

This year, we will have our Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, February 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary, immediately after our Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting.

Mc Amoss Celebrates 20th Anniversary!

On Sunday, February 5, we will recognize Mc Amoss at the end of the worship service for his 20th Anniversary as organist and accompanist here at Farmville Baptist Church! Mc began his service here as organist on Sunday, February 16, 1992. Thank you, Mc, for sharing your gifts and talents with us for the glory of God!

Congratulations to Toby and Suzanne Towler!

THANK YOU

How can I ever adequately express my appreciation to the FBC family for your love. The cards, notes, phone calls, hugs, thoughts and prayers during my illness and surgery in November and December have touched me deeply. Michael, thank you for your visits to the hospital and words of comfort and support during this difficult time. The Christian heart can touch those in need in such special ways. All of us are truly fortunate to be a part of such a loving church family.

Thank you again, Chuck Daniel

Dear Farmville Baptist Church, Kathryn Copeland, Cecil & Phyllis Yeatts, Cindy Cave, George Carter, Doris Weaver, Nancy & Clinton Vick and Ruth Patteson. Your prayer and cards meant so much while I was in The Woodland. I am home and doing good. Thank you all so much. God Bless you all, and keep up the good work!

Sincerely, Edna Clements

GROWING TOGETHER

Stewardship Report

Budget Receipts through 1/30………………………………. $19,232.01

Budget Disbursements through 1/30……………………….. $15,800.98

Budget Needs through 1/30…………………………………… $18,800.06

The year 2011 was a challenging one financially for FBC. Our budgeted expenses ran about $8,000 more than our offering income forcing us to turn to our reserves to make ends meet. Additionally we were unable to fully fund our state missions at the level listed in our budget. Therefore, we are going to report to you more often to keep everyone informed as we go through 2012. We encourage everyone to pitch in and give as they are able to give allowing the Church to serve this community and beyond.

Social Committee Needs Your Help!

We are looking for additional helping hands, and for someone to chair. This is a reminder that the social committee is NOT a standing committee, and you don’t have to cook, unless you wish. You can serve as long or as short a time as you desire. But we do need as many hands as possible to help. Please contact Penny Huskey (392-1050 or pvhuskey1[at]embarqmail.com).

Collegiate “Double the Fun” Dinners

During the month of February, our adopted college students and their families will be organized into seven dinner groups. They will meet either at the church or at homes, and our college students will be making a dinner for their host families! A schedule of the dinners this February is posted on our bulletin board.

Welcome New Members!

On Sunday, January 22, Ashley Cristo joined the church by transfer of membership letter from a sister Baptist church in Richmond. Ashley and Tyler live at 2727 New Bethel Road, Meherrin, 547-8099.

On Sunday, January 29, Katie Keller, a Longwood, student joined the church by statement of faith.

We welcome these two into the membership of Farmville Baptist!

Office Closed

The office will be closed on Monday, February 20 in observance of President’s Day.

Summer Mission Trip to Eastern Shore

Our Missions and Outreach Committee is organizing a summer mission trip on July 8 through 13 to the eastern shore of Virginia to work with Habitat for Humanity in building a home. We are looking to recruit a team of around 15 members ages 16 and up to go on the trip. There will be an informational meeting after worship on Sunday, February 19.

FBC Food Pantry

At the January 26th meeting the Missions and Outreach Committee, the members voted to dissolve the food pantry and distribute “non-expired” food items to FACES and therefore place the distribution of food to the needy in the hands of those who have that expertise & discernment. In the event that a client requests food from Farmville Baptist, that person will be referred to FACES. For clients who need immediate assistance, they will be given gift cards to either McDonald’s or Kroger’s.

Local Rescue Mission for the Homeless

There is a movement afoot to solicit help from local churches to provide temporary overnight shelter for the homeless during very cold nights this winter. When a need arises, Farmville Baptist may be contacted to provide Personal Care Kits (1 towel, 1 washcloth, 1 small bar soap/bottle of body wash, 1 small bottle shampoo, 1 toothbrush, 1 small tube of toothpaste) and Lunch Bags (1 non-perishable main dish (for example: vienna sausages, tuna salad kit, etc.), 1 package of crackers or something similar, 1 pudding, fruit cup, jello, etc., 1 snack cake, cookie, etc., and 1 bottle of water or juice. Right now, all we’re asked to do is to be ready to provide these care kits and lunch bags. The church will be notified when an actual need arises.
