“Gifts for the Journey”

In recent days, I’ve heard stories from church members who are wondering: “So what’s up with our Spiritual Transformation Journey?  Are we done?”  I know that for some of you, it feels like our spiritual journey has stalled.  While it is true that I have not talked or preached much about our spiritual journey this summer, it isn’t because we’ve ended this journey with a whimper.  Far from it!  My relative silence on this topic is due to the fact that I myself needed to go through a period of discernment and “incubation” so that I might be clear about what God is asking of me in this new phase of our journey.  I spent parts of this summer reading, learning, praying, going on personal retreats—all for the sake of allowing God to reveal to me a clearer vision of our future.

As the summer draws to a close, so too ends my time of personal discernment.  And today, I’m happy to announce that I’m more excited about our church’s spiritual journey than ever before!  I might even dare to say that, during my time of discernment this summer, I feel like I have seen the Promised Land!  I now have much greater clarity about the next steps of our journey, and I am excited and eager to lead the congregation to discern the specifics of what it means for Farmville Baptist to be the presence of Christ outside our walls.  And I plan to share in detail my current understanding of God’s future for us in my September sermon series called “Gifts for the Journey.”

One main premise of “Gifts for the Journey” is my conviction that God has already gifted or is presently gifting us with everything we need to live into God’s future for us.  God has gifted us with Jesus’ own mission to bless and redeem the world.  God has gifted us with a “divine discontent” that refuses to settle for the way we “do church” today.  God is offering to us the gift of knowing and befriending our neighbors through lives of radical hospitality.  And God is inviting us to offer to our neighbors the gift of our lives—our time, our money, our listening ear, our helping hand—so that we might truly learn what it means to love our neighbor as ourselves.  As you take steps to live out God’s gifts for the journey, I am convinced that God will reveal to you your role in God’s future story for Farmville Baptist just as God is revealing to me what my role will be.  I have already come to realize that my role will NOT involve telling you what God’s plan is for you.  My role as Pastor is to encourage you on your journey, to help you discover God’s plan for yourself, to equip you to follow that plan, and then to bless and release you to actually live it out!

Speaking about gifts for the journey, I also want to acknowledge how we have been blessed by the gifts of Anita Lynn in her role as Choir Director.  She will be stepping down from that role at the end of this month so that she can focus on her new teaching job.  Let us take the time to express our appreciation to Anita for her leadership with our sanctuary and bell choirs.  Let us thank Sandy Yeatts for her willingness to serve as our interim sanctuary choir director.  Let us pray for our Personnel Committee as they search for God’s person to lead in this role as we enter into a new phase in our church’s spiritual journey!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Consecration Sunday

This year, our stewardship emphasis theme is “Gifts for the Journey.” Throughout each Sunday in worship, members will share how we have been gifted by God, and what gifts we can offer to God as Farmville Baptist continues on our spiritual journey.

This stewardship emphasis will culminate on Consecration Sunday, September 26, when members will turn in estimate-of-giving cards at the end of the worship service to help support the ministry and mission of Farmville Baptist.  After the service, all are invited to a cookie and punch reception in the Fellowship Hall.  Let’s all attend church that Sunday and make September 26 a high attendance Sunday!

Very soon, letters will be mailed to members and regular attendees to give more details about our stewardship emphasis.  Please be in prayerful consideration in the coming weeks as you seek God’s guidance in your stewardship and participation in God’s work through the ministries of Farmville Baptist!

Quarterly Church Business Meeting

We will have our Quarterly Church Business Meeting on Sunday, September 19, at 9:45 a.m. in the Sanctuary.  The main items on the agenda include:

IN MEMORIAM

Eva Mottley Smith

1/30/1922—8/2/10

THANK YOU

Dear Friends, Nancy & Clint Vick, George Carter, Peggy Cave, Doris Weaver, Cecil & Phyllis Yeatts, Ruth Patteson and Cindy Cave.  Thank you all greatly for praying for me in April for my quick recovery to get well.  I am better — getting my diabetes under control.  I have developed a pinched nerve in my back now, but am hoping physical therapy will take the pain away.  I carry the prayer cards that you sent me, with me all the time.  When I’m feeling down and need a lift, I get the cards out and read them, giving me much comfort knowing there are others that care about me.  Then in return I pray for you all.  I do hope you all are well and enjoying life.  Please know that your caring blesses us all.  Again, thank you for your thoughtfulness in prayer.  God bless you all as he has blessed me!

Love, Sandy Bolick

On Sunday, August 22, David and Cindy Landrum became full members of Farmville Baptist by statement of faith and previous baptism.  The Landrums (pictured left) have two boys, Christopher and Stephen, and they live at 225 Mahan Rd., Farmville, 392-9793.

Starting September 5, Pastor Michael Cheuk will be leading a Sunday morning class in the Fellowship Hall from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. called “Building Strong Relationships.”  It is especially designed for college students and young adults (singles and couples) who are dating or thinking about marriage, and for couples wanting to enrich their marriage.

Topics to be covered: “Understanding Myself,” “Communication is the Key,” “Money Habitudes,” and “Dealing with Stress and Conflict.”  Cost is $10 for couples; $5 for singles for the purchase of “Money Habitude” cards needed for the third session of class.  Scholarships are available.  Please contact Michael if you’re interested in enrolling in the class.

The “Adopt-a-Student” program is a fun outreach program designed to give college students a “home away from home” while living in Farmville. Adopt-A-Student Progressive Dinner

On Sunday, September 12, a progressive dinner will be held for our college students.  It will start with salad and the main course (hot dogs and hamburgers) at the Watsons and ending with dessert at the Cheuks (both at the end of Dodd St.)  A van will pick up students at 3:50 pm at the LU Library.  If you wish to participate in our Adopt-a-Student program, this is where you’ll meet your new “parents”!  Contact Patsy Watson (392-8563) if you’d like to attend!

Emergency Roof Repair

Last week, a major hole was discovered on our sanctuary roof next to the bell tower.  We believe that this hole is the reason why the building has had water seepage problems in both the sanctuary and in some of our classrooms.  The Property Committee is preparing a repair estimate to be presented at our church business meeting on Sunday, September 19, 9:45 a.m. in the sanctuary.

A Journey to Reclaim God’s Power to Be Christ’s Church

Over the Christmas holidays, I started reading a provocative and challenging book by Alan Hirsh called The Forgotten Ways. One of the central arguments of the book is that most modern, western Christian churches have forgotten the power that lies hidden at the very heart of God’s people, a power that propelled the Christian movement to grow from as few as 25,000 Christians in 100 A.D. to up to 20,000,000 Christians by 310 A.D.  During this time, Christianity was an illegal religion.  Christians did not have any “church buildings” or scriptures as we know them.  Nor did they have a professional form of leadership, or seeker-sensitive services, youth groups, worship bands, or seminaries.  And they actually made it hard to join the church, requiring converts to undergo a long initiation period before they were accepted into the church!

So how did the early church grow at such a phenomenal rate in the midst of these unfavorable conditions?  Hirsh argues that because of these harsh conditions, early Christians were forced to rely not on the things modern Christians usually rely on, like centralized structures, professional clergy, buildings, or programs to spread the good news.  Rather, the early Christians were forced to rely on being true to the gospel based on their passionate love of Christ, prayer, radical discipleship, and risk-taking mission.

Last Sunday, as we kicked off our prayer groups, I truly believe that these groups are our attempt to awaken that dormant potential that is in every one of us to tap into the power of the Holy Spirit. We seek God to show us how we can live out lives of radical hospitality, passionate worship, intentional faith development, risk taking mission, and extravagant generosity.

I want to invite you to participate in this exciting venture!  I’m asking you to rely less on me and more on the Holy Spirit to give you a vision for our future!   One way to do that is to join one of the following prayer groups that will be meeting in the coming weeks.  It’s not too late to join and participate!

Sunday mornings, starting Feb. 7, 9:30 to 11 am, every other Sunday.   Location: FBC office.  Facilitator: John Slade, 392-5382.

Sunday mornings, starting Jan. 31, 9:30 to 10:30 am, every other Sunday.  Location: FBC.  Facilitator: Elizabeth Whiley, 315-0160.

Sunday afternoons, starting Jan. 31, 4 to 5 pm, every other Sunday.   Location: 1100 4th Ave. Ext.  Facilitator: Doris Weaver, 392-8538.

Monday evenings, starting Jan. 25, 6 to 7 pm, every other Monday.  Location: FBC Fellowship Hall.  Facilitator: Ken Copeland, 392-4765.

Thursday evenings, starting Jan. 28, 6 to 7 pm, weekly.   Location: FBC Parlor.  Facilitator: Crystal Cupp, 392-4678.

Friday at noon, starting Feb. 5, 12 to 1 pm, weekly.   Location: FBC Parlor.  Facilitator: Michael Cheuk, 391-3616.

May God bless our journey to reclaim God’s power to be Christ’s Church!

— Journeying on, Michael

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ash Wednesday Service

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty days before Easter (excluding Sundays).  Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance and as a reminder of our mortality.

This year, we will have our Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, February 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary, immediately after our Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting.

“You’ve Got the Time” to Listen to the New Testament

The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship is partnering with “Faith Comes By Hearing” audio Bible ministry in providing free MP3 CDs to members of FBC so that each family (including children) can listen to a dramatized reading of the entire New Testament during the season of Lent.

We will have a special presentation about this audio Bible ministry during our worship service on February 7 and 14, in which we will distribute the free CDs.  Toward the end of Lent, we will collect an offering to support this ministry.

Visit the website: FaithComesByHearing.com for more information about the “Faith Comes By Hearing” audio Bible ministry.

“Souper Bowl” of Caring

Our youth will collect a monetary donation to FACES, our local food pantry, at the end of our worship service on Sunday, February 7.  Please come to worship with a little extra cash on hand to support this cause!

Food Pantry Donations

Our emergency food pantry is running low.  We especially need peanut butter, jelly, crackers, cereal, canned vegetables, soups, canned meats, any kind of non-refrigerated microwaveable meals.  In 2009, we provided twenty-eight local families with fifty-seven bags of food.  Donations can be left outside the pantry door in the basement.
