Putting the Pieces of the ‘Vision Puzzle’ Together”
As a child, I used to do puzzles. Often, I would choose a puzzle because of the picture on the box cover and I would put the puzzle together by starting with the border pieces on the edge and working my way in. It was so gratifying seeing the pieces of the puzzle coming together and looking like the picture on the box. I felt such a sense of accomplishment when I completed a puzzle. But it sure was frustrating when a piece or two of the puzzle went missing, and the puzzle could not be completed.
As we continue our Spiritual Transformation Journey, I’ve heard people say many times that they are still waiting and praying for God to reveal a vision of our future as a church. It is as if we’re waiting for the fog to lift so that we’ll see clearly a vision or a road map so that we can begin our spiritual journey in earnest. But for now, we’re just waiting and praying.
In the last few weeks, I’m beginning to realize that the vision for our future is not “out there” while we’re just waiting for God to unveil it. It is more likely that the vision for our future is within us! We are the vision of Farmville Baptist Church, and God is waiting on us to live out His call for our lives! We are like the pieces of the puzzle; each of us plays a unique part in the overall picture of God’s plan for our church. To the extent that we discern God’s will for our lives and have the courage to live it out as a church to the best of our understanding, we are putting the pieces of the “vision puzzle” together! No, we can’t see the whole picture beforehand, but we will see with greater clarity what that picture is when we begin to live out what we know. Furthermore, this vision puzzle does not have any edges or borders. We begin in the center and work our way out to an ever-expanding picture of what God wants us to be and to do in our community and our world! Finally, in order for the “vision puzzle” to be complete, every member of Farmville Baptist Church is needed to be a part of this discerning process to see who God is calling us to serve and what ministries God is calling us to join or to start in our community.
During these weeks of Lent, may God lead us all, to place us where He wants us, so that together we will put the pieces of the vision puzzle together and live into the kind of church God wants us to be!

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Journey to the Cross
Lent is a forty-day period in our church calendar that is set aside for reflection and repentance. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. For contemporary Christians, this is a season for prayer, penitence, and preparation for Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.
The Farmville Area Ministerial Association invites you to attend their Wednesday Lenten Services at 12 noon followed by a free soup lunch at 12:30 p.m. The following is a schedule of churches hosting these services:
Wed., March 3 – First Baptist
Wed., March 10 – St. Theresa Catholic
Wed., March 17 – Farmville Presbyterian
Wed., March 24 – Johns Memorial Episcopal
On Friday, April 2, FBC will host a community-wide Good Friday Service at noon. A soup lunch will be served after the service.
17th Annual CBFV General Assembly – March 11 and 12, 2010 First Baptist Church, Virginia Beach
Brian D. McLaren – author, speaker, pastor, and networker among innovative Christian leaders, thinkers, and activists will join us via Skype. In preparation for our conversation with Brian, we ask that all participants read his recent book, Everything Must Change or A New Kind of Christianity (to be released in February 2010). Bo Prosser, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s Coordinator of Congregational Formation, will facilitate our conversation with Brian.
Daylight Savings Time Begins
Daylight Savings Time begins this year on March 14 at 2:00 a.m. Don’t forget to “Spring Ahead” one hour!
“You’ve Got the Time” to Listen to the New Testament
The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship is partnering with “Faith Comes By Hearing” audio Bible ministry in providing free MP3 CDs to members of FBC so that each family (including children) can listen to a dramatized reading of the entire New Testament during the season of Lent.
We will have a special presentation about this audio Bible ministry during our worship service on February 7 and 14, in which we will distribute the free CDs. Toward the end of Lent, we will collect an offering to support this ministry.
Visit the website: FaithComesByHearing.com for more information about the “Faith Comes By Hearing” audio Bible ministry.

THANK YOU
I just wanted to thank you for your support on the mission trip that I attended last month with Longwood BCM. I cannot express the gratitude I have for your support. Without your support both financially and through prayer, I would have not have had the blessing of this trip. The trip was a great success for God. We visited many places, including orphanages, an island city, and many kids to play soccer and other sports. The trip would not have been possible without the love and support from you all. God was truly present the whole trip and I, along with everyone from the group was definitely changed by the love of our King. Once again thank you so much for the shirts and more importantly for the prayers.
Your Fellow Brother, Jake Luginbuhl

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Farmville Baptist Church,
Kent and I want to thank you for the prayer cards sent from the Farmville Church Family. We appreciate each one of you who pray for Kent’s health. He is feeling much better day by day and adjusting to the “blood thinner” medicine pretty well. May the Lord richly bless you and your church family.
Love in Christ, Kent and Kathy Cheuk

Thank you for your kindness in allowing the Rotary Club of Farmville to use the church’s kitchen again this year to make our annual chili. The funds raised stay here in our community. Our big project this year is to install outdoor physical fitness equipment stations around Wilckes Lake as part of the new Sarah Terry Trail. It is hoped entire families may use it together. Again, thank you very much.
Sincerely, Kerby Moore, Rotary President
CONGRATULATIONS

PASTOR’S COLUMN
A Journey to Reclaim God’s Power to Be Christ’s Church
Over the Christmas holidays, I started reading a provocative and challenging book by Alan Hirsh called The Forgotten Ways. One of the central arguments of the book is that most modern, western Christian churches have forgotten the power that lies hidden at the very heart of God’s people, a power that propelled the Christian movement to grow from as few as 25,000 Christians in 100 A.D. to up to 20,000,000 Christians by 310 A.D. During this time, Christianity was an illegal religion. Christians did not have any “church buildings” or scriptures as we know them. Nor did they have a professional form of leadership, or seeker-sensitive services, youth groups, worship bands, or seminaries. And they actually made it hard to join the church, requiring converts to undergo a long initiation period before they were accepted into the church!
So how did the early church grow at such a phenomenal rate in the midst of these unfavorable conditions? Hirsh argues that because of these harsh conditions, early Christians were forced to rely not on the things modern Christians usually rely on, like centralized structures, professional clergy, buildings, or programs to spread the good news. Rather, the early Christians were forced to rely on being true to the gospel based on their passionate love of Christ, prayer, radical discipleship, and risk-taking mission.
Last Sunday, as we kicked off our prayer groups, I truly believe that these groups are our attempt to awaken that dormant potential that is in every one of us to tap into the power of the Holy Spirit. We seek God to show us how we can live out lives of radical hospitality, passionate worship, intentional faith development, risk taking mission, and extravagant generosity.
I want to invite you to participate in this exciting venture! I’m asking you to rely less on me and more on the Holy Spirit to give you a vision for our future! One way to do that is to join one of the following prayer groups that will be meeting in the coming weeks. It’s not too late to join and participate!
Sunday mornings, starting Feb. 7, 9:30 to 11 am, every other Sunday. Location: FBC office. Facilitator: John Slade, 392-5382.
Sunday mornings, starting Jan. 31, 9:30 to 10:30 am, every other Sunday. Location: FBC. Facilitator: Elizabeth Whiley, 315-0160.
Sunday afternoons, starting Jan. 31, 4 to 5 pm, every other Sunday. Location: 1100 4th Ave. Ext. Facilitator: Doris Weaver, 392-8538.
Monday evenings, starting Jan. 25, 6 to 7 pm, every other Monday. Location: FBC Fellowship Hall. Facilitator: Ken Copeland, 392-4765.
Thursday evenings, starting Jan. 28, 6 to 7 pm, weekly. Location: FBC Parlor. Facilitator: Crystal Cupp, 392-4678.
Friday at noon, starting Feb. 5, 12 to 1 pm, weekly. Location: FBC Parlor. Facilitator: Michael Cheuk, 391-3616.
May God bless our journey to reclaim God’s power to be Christ’s Church!
