PASTOR’S COLUMN

“Reasons to Give Thanks”

I have so many reasons to give thanks to God and to Farmville Baptist Church!

First of all, I want to thank the congregation for recognizing my fifth anniversary as your Pastor.  I was quite surprised at the church picnic when Gene Watson and Jim Davis asked me to come up front for a presentation.  With Gene and Jim, you never know what’s going to happen!  But seriously, I was humbled by your thoughtfulness and generosity.  The white Communion stole is one that I will treasure, and I look forward to wearing it every time I celebrate the Lord’s Supper with you.  I also want to thank you for the generous love offering.  Beth and I look forward to using it for a nice get-a-way in the near future.  But apart from these gifts, our whole family has been blessed by your love, care, friendship and support over these past five years.  It has been a joy-filled journey for me, and I thank God for Farmville Baptist Church and what you all have meant to me!

Another reason for me to give thanks is Anita Lynn, who served so capably as our Choir Director, but is now stepping down so that she can devote more time to her new full-time position as an elementary school music teacher.  What a step of faith she took almost five years ago to follow God’s call to step into this position!  What a gracious choir we have for allowing Anita to grow in her directing and singing skills!  I thank God for Anita’s willingness to offer her gifts to the life of this church, and I wish her the best in her new position.  I’m also thankful that Sandy Yeatts and Mary Jo Chassey will be filling in as interim directors for the sanctuary choir and bell choir respectively, until we hire a permanent choir director.  We are blessed to have such talented folks!

Finally, I am thankful for the congregation’s response on Consecration Sunday!  We had wonderful attendance in worship, and I am grateful for the offering of your financial resources to support the ministry and mission of Farmville Baptist.  As Ken Copeland announced after worship, from the estimate-of-giving cards turned in last Sunday, and from projected giving based on historical giving patterns, we can expect an increase of 9.4% over last year’s grand total of receipts!  This is great news in light of our economic times!

I truly believe that we are on the cusp of something exciting here at Farmville Baptist as we continue to seek God’s direction for our vision and mission.  I know that God will continue to bless and equip us to be the presence of Christ in our community and our world.  And for that, I am thankful most of all!

Journeying on, Michael

To My Dear Church Family.  So many of you have called me or come to my home and brought meals, treats, flowers, and most of all your love as I have been struggling with recent health issues.  I have also received prayer notes from many of you.  I can never thank you all enough for your support and kindness.  I am so blessed with my church family and appreciate all you have done for me.

Sincerely, Ruth Ferguson and Darlene Bratcher

As my way of saying a heart felt Thank You for the support you gave me toward my recent People to People trip, you are cordially invited to the following event:  On Sunday, October 10, beginning at 3:00 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall, I will give a Power Point travel-log presentation of my 20 day trip through Greece, Italy, and France.  We’ll open the doors at 2:30 p.m. for fun, fellowship, and refreshments.  We’ll start promptly at 3:00 p.m.  The presentation should take 45 minutes to an hour – depends on the number of questions I get!  I hope you can attend.  If not, please know how sincerely appreciative I am of the support I have received, both financially and in prayers.  I could not have gone on this trip without it!

Gratefully yours, Jewel Moore

On behalf of the family of Ruth Morrissett, I would like to thank Reverend Michael Cheuk and members of the Farmville Baptist Church for the lovely prayer cards sent to mother along with visits, phone calls and numerous acts of kindness shown to her while mother was staying at the Woodlands.  Your expressions of well-wishes and thoughtfulness meant a great deal to her.  In addition, I would like to thank Michael for conducting mother’s Memorial Service in such an uplifting way as well as sharing with us his beautiful singing voice.  Finally, words cannot express my deep appreciation for the lovely luncheon provided by the Church Social Committee.  The committee out-did themselves with their delicious offerings and in making everyone there feel so welcome.  This church had always meant so much to me while growing up in Farmville, but it will especially hold a special place in my heart for the rest of my life.  Thank you again for your love, thoughtfulness, and kindness.

Sincerely, Martha M. Knauer

SERVING OTHERS

Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions

In the month of October, Farmville Baptist will focus on the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions emphasis.  Our goal this year is to collect $1,300.00 for this offering.

What is the Alma Hunt Emphasis for Virginia Missions?

The Alma Hunt Emphasis for Virginia Missions is a year-round expression of the mission spirit of Virginia Baptists.  This offering makes possible special ministries, outreach projects, and initiatives that are not funded through regular streams of giving but are uniquely connected to Virginia Baptists.  These ministry allocations are determined annually for publication.

Why is it called the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions?

Alma Hunt was a Virginia-born, world-renown Baptist advocate of national and international missions. Until her death last year at age 98, her sacrificial service was an example for all Virginia Baptists to emulate.  Thus, the State Missions Offering of Virginia was named in her honor in 1998.

Community Resource Fair, October 9

On Saturday, October 9, the Farmville Area Ministerial Association is sponsoring a Community Resource Fair from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Prince Edward County High School Cafeteria.  Representatives from over 25 local service providers, agencies and ministries will be there.  Come and see how you and your family might benefit from these service providers.  Come and see how you can help your neighbors by volunteering at some of these agencies and ministries.

Thanksgiving Baskets

It’s not too soon to start thinking about Thanksgiving! As you make your weekly trips to the grocery store, please consider purchasing additional canned goods that would be appropriate for a Thanksgiving dinner and contribute those to the FBC food pantry.  The Missions & Outreach committee will be planning and organizing for the distribution of Thanksgiving Baskets to local needy families.  We need your help!

The Jail Ministry Team invites you . . .
