PASTOR’S COLUMN
“Faith Coaching”
A couple of weeks ago, I attended a four-day training course on Christian coaching at the Hollifield Leadership Center in Conover, NC. When we hear the word “coach,” we often think of a person who trains athletes or directs athletic teams. But the coaching instruction that I received is designed to help people gain clarity and focus in moving forward in their Christian faith and life. A coach engages in conversations with people and listens carefully to their concerns, goals and dreams. Unlike counseling, which assumes dysfunction on the part of the client and focuses on the past, coaching assumes health on the part of the person being coached and focuses on his or her future action plans. Unlike a mentoring relationship, which relies on the knowledge and experience of the mentor, coaching relies on the knowledge, experience and resources of the person being coached.
Coaching provides great benefits. It orientates around a person’s strengths and not weaknesses. It provides clarity and focus regarding one’s personal goals and objectives. A coach does not give answers, but asks powerful questions to help people discover and achieve their God-given potential and purpose. And as they discover answers and solutions to their problems, it inspires confidence in their ability to make intentional progress in achieving God’s plan for their lives.
I am attracted to faith coaching as one (but not the only) important tool for pastoral ministry, because it frees me from having to tell people what to do! Coaching honors the image of God in people and it trusts that the Spirit of God continues to dwell and speak to each person regarding his or her life. If you ever feel a need to have a coach to take you from one stage to another in your life, I would love to have an opportunity to enter into a coaching relationship with you! In the meantime, let me ask two coaching questions for you to consider: Where are you now, and where does God want you to be? How can you plan the steps to get to where God wants you to be?
In other matters, I want to thank the Rev. Cheri Wise for filling the pulpit on Sunday, May 1. I will still be in Dallas, TX with my family as we attend the memorial service of my uncle, the Rev. Johann Yang. Cheri is the director of the Baptist Campus Ministries at Longwood and Hampden-Sydney, and I’m excited that you will have a chance to hear her preach. At the end of the service, we will also recognize Sara Thompson for her service here as our ministry intern. I hope you will plan to be in worship that day!
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Children’s Musical, May 8
Hallelujah, What a Savior!
by Luke Gambill & Lee Black
During morning worship on Sunday, May 8, our children will share with joy and excitement the story of Jesus’ resurrection in this delightful mini-musical. Through brief drama segments and terrific songs, this short but powerful presentation tells the amazing story of salvation and forgiveness made available to each one of us through the love and sacrifice of our Savior King.
Youth-Led Worship Service, May 15
Julie Gaines, our ministry intern, is organizing our youth to lead in morning worship on May 15. Our youth will lead in the readings, the prayers and special music. Jewel Moore will sing “Restless” by Audrey Assad. Julie Gaines will be our preacher that Sunday.
Office Closed on Friday Afternoons During Summer
The church office will be closed on Friday afternoons from May 6 through August 5. Friday afternoons are Michael’s usual time off and Kathy will be using vacation and flex time.

THANK YOU
Dear Family of Farmville Baptist. What an incredible ministry you as a church body have! My mother-in-law, Hester Bishop, has been attending your church for some time now and absolutely loves it! However, I was surprised, delighted, and moved to tears as day after day for 2-3 weeks or more, I received your “Prayer Time” cards. I hope you all realize what a wonderful ministry this is. I knew people were praying for me, but to have people I don’t even know send me cards to let me know they were praying for me and thinking about me was so very wonderful! Please be encouraged to continue this ministry for years to come. I got an excellent report yesterday—my lymph nodes are clear and I have a 95-98% recovery rate. Prayer changes things!
Love, Julie Phillips

We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Michael Cheuk for the lovely ceremony and to all who expressed condolences through visits, cards, prayers and food due to the recent passing of our mother, Lorena Huskey.

I just want to express how happy I am to be serving as the choir director for FBC and for the Personnel Committee giving me this opportunity. I had no idea when I was approached about filling in as the Interim Director back in October that I would find myself where I am right now. At that time, I was adamant that I would only do it as long as the Personnel Committee would continue the search for a permanent director. Five years ago, when I stepped down as the choir director, I remember having a heart-to-heart conversation with Michael, and he said more than once, “Are you sure?” And I said I was. But it seems God had other plans. I’ve always heard people talk about how they’ve heard God speaking to them and I would think to myself, “Why isn’t He speaking to me? What is it that He wants me to do? Am I not listening hard enough?” So I prayed and prayed that He would show me what it was He wanted me to do and I learned you have to be patient with God, and sometimes when you’re adamantly saying “No!” He’s saying “Yes!”
Blessings, Sandy Yeatts

In Need of a Few Good Men!
(A few ladies would be fine, too!)
Are you a male? Do you like to sing? We practice on Wednesday nights at 6:30 p.m. and warm up each Sunday morning at 10:40 a.m. for the morning worship service. Come try it out and see what you think. You just might like what you find! Contact Sandy Yeatts, 223-2295, for more information.
