PASTOR’S COLUMN
“Summer Conversations”
Summer is finally here and when I think of summer, I often have in mind a slower pace of life punctuated by opportunities for family and friends to get together for food and conversations. It is in this spirit that I would like to host a series of “conversations” held one Sunday each month during the summer. These conversations will be on various topics and will target different segments of our population, (and will consequently be held at varying times), but everyone is invited to attend. My hope is that this will give me an opportunity to listen to the concerns of the congregation and to hear new ideas for ministry, service and worship.
One topic of conversation that has come to my attention is the question of unbaptized children receiving communion during worship. On Sunday, June 5, I would like to invite all the parents of our children to talk about this in the Fellowship Hall at 9:45 a.m. I will briefly present our church’s current policy regarding communion, and I would appreciate input from our parents and others regarding this issue. Muffins and juice will be served.
In the month of July, I would like to engage in a conversation about our senior adult ministry. This conversation is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, July 17, after the worship service in our Fellowship Hall. A light lunch will be served as we talk about how Farmville Baptist might better minister to and with our senior adults in the months ahead.
Finally, I hope to have another conversation on Sunday August 21, at 9:45 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. In this conversation, I would like to hear from the congregation what needs they see in our community, and how we might be able to meet those needs. In the coming months, I hope you will keep your eyes and ears open to the needs of our community that are not being met so that you can contribute to this conversation.
In some ways, these conversations are a continuation of the Pastoral Evaluation Surveys that were taken in April. I want to thank those forty folks who took the time in filling out the survey and to Jay Lynn for administering it. Starting in June, the results of the survey will be made available through the church office for anyone who requests it. Copies of the results will also be available on Sunday mornings for members to pick up.
Finally, thank you for your prayers, cards, food and other expressions of your care following my uncle’s death. I really appreciate your ministry to me during this time. I am grateful and blessed to be your pastor!

In Need of a Few Good Men! (A few ladies would be fine, too!)
Are you a male? Do you like to sing? Ever thought about singing in the choir and have just been a little shy or thought “I can’t do that!” Well, now’s the time to put away the shyness and put away your anxieties. The Sanctuary Choir has got a spot for you! We’d like to grow our tenor and bass sections and would love to have you join us. We practice on Wednesday nights at 6:30 p.m. and warm up each Sunday morning at 10:40 a.m. for the morning worship service. Come try it out and see what you think. You just might like what you find! Contact Sandy Yeatts, 223-2295, for more information.
Bell Choir will rehearse at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Childcare is provided. If you’re interested in joining the Bell Choir, please contact Mary Jo Chassey, 223-7481.

SERVING OTHERS
CBF Global Missions Offering Report
As of Sunday, May 24, we have raised $986.00. Many thanks to those who contributed. This year, our CBF Global Missions Offering goal is $1,100.00!
The Jail Ministry Team invites you . . .

FACES Needs Your Help
Youth, adults, and families with children are invited to serve our community. We would like to emphasize the summer months are more in need of volunteers, since Longwood & Hampden-Sydney students are gone.
- About an hour of your time is needed to help stock and organize food bags on Thursday nights at 6:00 p.m.
- On Saturday, June 18, 7:30 to 11 a.m., Farmville Baptist Church will be volunteering at FACES (416 N. South Street), our local food pantry. Meet at FACES at 7:30 a.m., or go at 9:30 a.m. to be the “second shift.”
BCM Needs Your Help on June 11
Cheri Wise needs help finishing painting and light construction on the BCM building on Saturday, June 11, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please RSVP the SBA Office (1-877-551-2701 or southsidebaptist [at] centurylink.net) if you can help. Lunch will be served.
Communion Ministry
The deacons would like to offer communion to our church families that are shut-ins or in the retirement homes in our area. We are happy to provide communion to anyone else that we know about. If you or someone you know would like to have communion served to them, please contact the church office so our deacons can be made aware of the need and schedule the visitation on our communion Sundays.
Roadside Clean Up, Saturday, June 4
Meet at “Tom’s Country Store” by 8:00 a.m. Any questions, call Penny Huskey (392-1050 or pvhuskey1 [at] embarqmail.com) or Bill Covington (392-1034 or bcovington [at] kinex.net). Dress for the weather and bring gloves to participate in cleaning litter from the stretch of road that our church adopted several years ago. Some of the interesting things we have found in the past are cell phones, boots, gloves, a trash can, and even a $50 bill! We can’t guarantee you’ll find money, but you will find fellowship and a sense of pride in serving our community.
