PASTOR’S COLUMN
“Mission Matters”
On Sunday, June 21, during my sermon, I challenged the congregation regarding our CBF global missions offering, which at that time had totaled about $900. I recalled a conference phone call that I had a month ago with Dr. Daniel Vestal, the executive coordinator for the national CBF, who gave a report on the steadily declining global missions offering receipts that are now threatening the financial support of CBF missionaries. After learning about the needs of our missionaries, I felt that Farmville Baptist could not afford not to make our offering goal since missionary lives & ministries are literally counting on us to do our part. On that Sunday, I challenged each family in our church to contribute at least an additional $20 to see if we can match what we gave last year, which was around $1,300. I also announced that Beth and I would match gifts received for this purpose up to $250. Well, I don’t know how you did it, but the global missions donation that Sunday totaled $252! Beth and I gladly matched $250, and after a few other donations received later that week, I’m happy to announce that so far, we’ve collected $1,589.00! Thank you so much for coming though in the clutch!
At the CBF national assembly meeting that I attended this past week, I witnessed the commissioning of Jon and Tanya Parks as missionaries to the Roma gypsies in Slovakia. Jon is currently the pastor of Kenbridge Baptist, and I’ve already invited Jon and Tanya (and their two young daughters) to come to Farmville Baptist this fall to preach and share with us what they will be doing in Slovakia. I hope that their visit with us make our connection to CBF global missions even more real and personal! Thanks again for your generosity.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Vacation Bible School
Shiver me timbers! Vacation Bible School is fast upon us! Our voyage will take place July 10-14, 6:00-8:15 p.m. All children ages 3 through grade 5 are invited to join us for a “High Seas Expedition!” Our online registration is up and running at www.farmvillebaptist.org or you can register in person.
Our craft crew is in need of clean, empty water bottles, 12-16 oz. These can be dropped off in the plastic bin near the parking lot entrance of the church.
We will have a VBS decorating party on Sunday, July 10, immediately after the worship service. Pizza lunch will be served. Please stay and help us transform our church into a high seas destination! If you are planning to stay, please let Anita Lynn know so she can order enough pizza: anita [at] jaylynn.com or 434-391-3751.
Our VBS kids will be participating in three different mission projects this year. 1) Through “Operation Kid-to-Kid,” VBS participants will help assemble security blankets to be sent to young AIDS victims in Africa. 2) The money collected during our VBS missions offering will be donated to “Nothing but Nets,” a program which helps prevent the spread of malaria by providing mosquito nets to children in Africa. 3) Children will be asked to bring a canned good to VBS to be donated to our church’s food pantry. We are excited about all three of these mission projects, and are eager to teach our VBS children that we can share Jesus’ love both globally and locally!
We are still looking for nautically themed decorations: fishing nets/soccer nets, life preservers, ships’ wheels, a ship’s bell, wooden barrels, lanterns,
wooden crates, nautical knick-knack, stuffed or inflatable parrots, blue paper or cellophane, etc. Items can be dropped off in the fellowship hall.
And, as always, we welcome your prayers and financial donations!
Church Business Meeting, Sunday, July 17, 9:45 a.m.
There will be a Church Business Meeting on July 17 in the sanctuary. A Book of Reports will be ready for pick up on Sunday, July 10. Committee chairs are asked to turn in their reports by June 30.
Church-wide Ice Cream Summer Social (Postponed!)
Editor’s note: Our Church-wide picnic has been postponed! Please join us after worship on July 17 for our church-wide Ice Cream Summer Social at 7:00 p.m. at Wilck’s Lake (beside the playground). Please bring a chair and your appetite. For more information or for anyone interested in making “homemade” ice cream, please see Penny Huskey Bring a friend.
Youth to Attend Passportchoices
From July 17-22, 17 youth and 4 chaperones will be attending Passportchoices youth camp at Wingate University in Wingate, North Carolina. Please pray for our group as we travel and spend a week strengthening our relationships with each other and with our Heavenly Father
Back to School Event, Saturday, August 6
On Saturday, August 6, we will be partnering with FACES, the Youth Empowerment Center and “Reclaiming Our Lives” ministry to organize a “Back-to-School” event for approximately 100-150 children of the clients of FACES.
From 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., the children will be served a hot breakfast in the Fellowship Hall of Farmville Baptist. We need volunteers to help set up, cook and serve breakfast to these students. Please contact the church office (392-5041) if you can help.
Afterwards, the children will head over to the Youth Empowerment Center where Jackie Ghee and her staff will lead a workshop on parental involvement in our local schools and the prevention of bullying.
At the end of that program, we hope to distribute back packs to the students. In the back packs, we will include school supplies that students will need for the upcoming school year. A list of school supplies is posted on our missions bulletin board. The supplies will need to be dropped off at Farmville Baptist on August 1 and 2. Thank you for your help and contributions!.

Clinton and I want to thank all of you for your prayers and the many kind deeds you did for us during my recent unexpected encounter with the results of surgery. Your phone calls, visits, cards, the wonderful food you brought and especially your prayers have made this life event tolerable!

Dear Michael, Kathy and Members of Farmville Baptist Church. Our fundraiser dinner for Rosemary Pollard was a huge success! We give all the glory to God and much of the thanks to you. We appreciate your generosity and willingness to allow your facilities to benefit someone who doesn’t attend your church. Your compassion and servant’s heart is such a testimony to God’s Spirit within your church fellowship. We now have all the funds needed to build Rosemary’s porch! Thank you for coming alongside us in our efforts.
