“Spiritual Transformation Journey” Update

After worship on Sunday, January 11, close to thirty people attended our “spiritual transformation journey” meeting with Bill Moore.  At the meeting, Bill shared with the group what the journey was all about: a process that fosters a transformation of our lifestyles so that we as individuals and as a church will walk closer with Christ and live into the preferred future that God has for us.  It is a future that includes a deeper walk of faith and a closer sense of belonging among our members so that we can better be the presence of Christ here in Farmville.

Bill briefly told us how this journey begins.  After the church formally decides to embark on this journey, the congregation will choose among our membership seven spiritually mature individuals who are positive and passionate about the church.  This group will form a leadership team that will work closely with me in this journey.  During the next 16 months, this leadership team will go on three retreats (joining leadership teams from three other churches) to receive training and coaching on how to lead our congregation into a season of prayer, a season of congregational discernment of God’s vision and call, and a season of writing down the “future story” of Farmville Baptist based on the collective input of all members who participate in this journey.

We have scheduled a called church business meeting on February 15 to vote formally to undertake this journey.  I pray that you will support this endeavor.  I’m excited about what God has in store for us!

In another matter, Amanda Johnston resigned from her position on January 7.  Let us keep Amanda and John in our thoughts and prayers as they go through a challenging time of transition and change.  I want to thank them both for their service and ministry to Farmville Baptist, and I wish God’s blessings upon them as they seek God’s direction and call for their lives in the weeks and months to come.

Yours in Christ, Michael

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Letter of Resignation from Rev. Amanda Johnston

January 7, 2009

Dear Members of Farmville Baptist Church,

I have resigned from my position as Associate Pastor of Farmville Baptist Church.  This has been a time of great growth and ministry opportunities for me.  However, after much prayerful consideration, I find that it is time for me to pursue other opportunities in the ministry.

I pray that God will bless this congregation as you endeavor to serve our Lord Jesus Christ within the community and beyond.

Blessings, Amanda Johnston

IMPORTANT MESSAGE about The Informer!

Starting next month, we will stop mailing The Informer, our church’s newsletter, to everyone on our newsletter mailing list.  Instead, we will send out a monthly email with a link to the section of our website that contains the newsletter.  If you want to receive that electronic notification, please email the church office (office [at] farmvillebaptist.org) your preferred email address.  If you do not have internet access, or if you would like to continue receiving the newsletter by postal mail, please inform the church office (434 392-5041).

We are trying this method of delivering our newsletter as a way to save on the cost of paper, printing and postage.  Thank you for your understanding and patience as we transition to this new system.

“Souper Bowl” of Caring – Sunday, Feb. 1

Our youth will collect a monetary donation to FACES, our local food pantry, immediately after the worship service on Sunday, Feb. 1.  Please come to worship prepared to support this cause!

Called Church Business Meeting, Sun., Feb. 15, 9:45 a.m.

The church will vote to begin the “Spiritual Transformation Journey” and to approve recommendations from the Nominating Committee.

Ash Wednesday Service

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty days before Easter (excluding Sundays).  Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance and as a reminder of our mortality.

This year, we will have our Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, February 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, immediately after our Wednesday Night Soup Supper.  We invite you all to this worship service on February 25.

Decision for Christ and Baptism

On Sunday, January 25, Caitlin Daly came forward at the end of the service to request membership by believer’s baptism.  Caitlin lives at 100-F Poplar Forest Rd., 23901, and she will be baptized on March 1.

GROWING TOGETHER

2008 Year-End Stewardship Report

Our year-end report shows a total income of $225,015.80 for the year 2008.  On the expense side, our church spent $261,783.15.  Our expense budget was $282,603.  While we operated well under budget on our spending, we still had a deficit of about $36,000.  A partial explanation for this can be explained by the loss of some faithful givers who passed away last year, and by the economic downturn in our region.

While the deficit is certainly a concern, we were still able to operate last year because Farmville Baptist is a very strong church financially.  We have total liquid assets of $90,493.27 showing on our balance sheet as of December 31, 2008.  However, we cannot continue to dip into our assets.  We need to maintain and even grow our balance sheet so that we can secure the future needs of the church and our service to Christ.

While we are encouraged with the financial health of the church, it is very important that all of our members and faithful attendees maintain their giving and fulfill their pledges which were made last September. 2009 will be an exciting year as we experience growth in many areas of our church with visitors coming, new members joining, and college students worshipping and serving in many ways.  We truly are blessed as God has been good to us all.  May we return to God a generous share of what we have received through his Grace and Love.

Your Servant in Christ,
Chuck Daniel, Stewardship Chair
