We welcome students from Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College! We’re glad that you’re here. We want to invite you to these various opportunities for worship, growth and service at Farmville Baptist. Also, check out our latest blog entries related to our collegiate ministry.

Adopt-a-Student Ministry
We have folks in our church who love college students and who would like to provide a “home away from home” for you while you are here in college. Your adoptive family can be people you can turn to for a chance to get away from campus for a home-cooked meal, for help in time of need, for advice and support. For more information, please contact Patsy Watson (392-8563 or pwatson [at] southsidevafamilyymca [dot] org), our Adopt-a-Student coordinator, if you would like to be an adopted student. Visit last year’s blog entry for our more information.
Progressive Dinner, Sunday, September 12
You are invited to a progressive dinner on Sunday, September 12, 4:30 to around 6:30 pm starting with salad and the main course (hot dogs and hamburgers) at the Watsons and ending with dessert at the Cheuks (both at the end of Dodd St.) A van will pick up students at 3:50 pm at the LU Library. If you wish to participate in our Adopt-a-Student program, this is where you’ll meet your new “parents”! Contact Patsy Watson (392-8563) if you’d like to attend!
Other Ways You Can Get Involved Here
College students are a big part of the life of our church. We have college students sing in our sanctuary choir, teach in our children’s Sunday School, and help with childcare on Sunday mornings.
Sara Thompson, Ministry Intern
Hi! I’m Sara Thompson. I work with the children and college students here at Farmville Baptist. I grew up in as a pastor’s daughter in Crozet, Virginia, and was brought to the Farmville area by the pursuit of a degree in English Education and a minor in French (taking classes often taught by the Farmville Baptist organist, Dr. Amoss). In my spare time, I enjoy coloring, reading, and listening to the tunes of Relient K, my favorite band! I also enjoy napping, when I have time! My favorite Bible verse is Mark 10:27, because it reminds me that I can do all things (even a 10 page paper!) if I rely on God for help.
In Their Own Words . . .
Emily Caviness, Longwood senior
“Farmville Baptist Church is what has made Longwood feel like my home away from home. After a few weeks of attending FBC, the members joyfully gave me the financial support I needed to send me on my mission trip to China. Not only did they significantly give to me financially, before my trip they sent me letters letting me know they were praying for me. All of this support came from after only one semester of attending services. The members of FBC genuinely care about LU students and their personal walks with Christ, which anyone can tell simply by walking in the front doors of the church on a Sunday morning. Pastor Cheuk makes a point of connecting college students to the church and getting them involved, and truly cares about each person who walks in the church. FBC has made my experience at Longwood positive and purposeful! It will always have a special place in my heart.” Contact Emily at emily.caviness [at] live.longwood.edu.
Robbie Yancey, Longwood senior
“A home away from home, and a place to saturate an empty feeling with love is a very abridged sentiment I come to conclude about Farmville Baptist Church! I went through my first semester thinking I would be able to deal with this uncharted path of independence without help, and to a certain degree I did. Nevertheless I was moving through life with a sense of bareness, and I could not figure it out until I heard Pastor Cheuk speak at a BCM event, and was recommended to try Farmville Baptist the following Sunday. I fell in love with the unity and family feelings and affection radiating from the congregation; Immediately, I was approached, introduced and greeted by everyone around me. The outreach from the church to the college students is very warm and in my opinion that is exactly what college students need as they are being merged into an independent life full of new choices. FBC has become my family and has been there every time I have needed!” Contact Robbie at robert.yancey [at] live.longwood.edu.
