Children's HayrideLast Sunday, we hosted our annual Children’s Hayride.  Over forty children and adults enjoyed a fun hayride on a beautiful October afternoon.  Afterwards, they played games organized by our youth and enjoyed a hot dog supper.  Many thanks to Wayne Wallace and Sara Thompson for organizing the hayride and food, and to Julie Gaines and the youth for coming up with games for our children to play.

Passport Youth Camp

Posted on July 30th, 2009

youth_camp_group

On July 19 to 24, eleven of our youth, together with the youth from Tar Wallet Baptist Church attended Passport Youth Camp at Wingate University in North Carolina.  The theme of the week was “[re]mix” which led the youth to an inward journey of introspection and discipleship.  Students were reminded that Christ is the Reconciler and the Rebuilder of lives and that God accepts who we are, whatever we bring too Him and re-creates us as we seek to follow Him.  It was a transformative time for many of our youth and they came back full of renewed energy, passion and enthusiasm in their faith journey.  Many thanks to Jordan Whiley, Kim Davis and Julie Gaines for chaperoning this trip and for the congregation for their prayers and support!

Youth Hiking Trip

Posted on July 12th, 2009

youth-hikeOn July 11, Rick Chassey led the youth group on a hike at the  Mt. Pleasant Natural Area on Rt. 60 between Amherst and Buena Vista.  The hike was an easy to moderate 6 mile loop hike to the top of Mt. Pleasant.  The group had fun scrambling up the large rock outcrops on the east and west sides, and they enjoyed the spectacular views once they were able to get to the top.

Youth Sunday

Posted on April 20th, 2009

youth_banner1Yesterday, our youth led our Sunday morning worship service.  It was great seeing fourteen of our youth do everything from the chiming of the hour, reading scripture and litanies, praying, giving the Children’s Lesson, doing a skit, leading congregational singing, playing the piano, and giving the message. We are very proud of your youth for leading the service and for their willingness to use the talents that God has given them to share the Good News.

Liz Chassey and Sarah Cave (pictured above, far left), two high school seniors and best friends gave the message called “Holy Neon.”  They had a conversation about the journey they shared in their friendship and their faith, and how they are looking forward to God leading them into the future as freshmen at Longwood University.  You can listen or download their message by visiting this link.

After the service, our youth and children sponsored a spaghetti lunch and dessert auction fundraiser that raised over $900!  All proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward helping our children and youth attend Passport Kids and Passport Choices camp this summer.  Many thanks to Ken Copeland, our auctioneer, and to all the members, parents, youth and children who donated desserts, cooked and served the meal, cleaned up, AND bought desserts!

Back to School Laser Quest Lock In

Posted on August 13th, 2008

On Friday August 8 Farmville Baptist’s youth group embarked on a new adventure. They participated in a traveling lock in to celebrate the upcoming school year.

The lock in began at the church with dinner and then the youth traveled to Laser Quest, Laser Tag in Richmond, Virginia. There they enjoyed two exciting games of laser tag under black lights. Russell Chassey, who just graduated into the youth group stated that: “This is like Star Wars!” That feeling must have been shared by the group because when they returned to the church everyone voted to watch a Star Wars film. Transformers followed after that carrying on the futuristic theme of the evening. This event was a first for the group but it will not be the last! If you’re in grades 6-12 we hope to see you at our next lock in!

PASSways Camp ’08

Posted on July 13th, 2008

This year, nine of our youth and two from Tar Wallet Baptist Church left for Wingate University in North Carolina for PASSways youth camp. It was an awesome experience! This year’s theme was Countdown. The question is what exactly were we counting down? Well several things. First of all we counted down the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

There are eight Millennium Development Goals:

  1. To end hunger and extreme poverty
  2. Achieve universal primary education
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women
  4. Reduce child mortality
  5. Improve maternal health
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS , Malaria, and other diseases
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability
  8. Develop a global partnership for development

We also learned that we are counting down to the completion of these goals by 2015. In order to make this happen we as Christians must do something. Our motivation spurs from the fact that these goals reflect the teachings of Jesus and the Kingdom of God. Our inspiration for the week was that God’s Kingdom has come , we must change our lives now!

During PASSways our youth learned about how these goals have a Biblical basis in their daily Bible study groups. They also had the opportunity to participate in many different faith experiences. Some had the opportunity to work at a day camp with children. Others did contruction work at a halfway house. Still others participated in what PASSways calls “choices”. Faith and the Arts, chosen by two of our youth explored how God gifts us with many different artistic talents and how those talents can be used to worship Him. Common Threads taught one of our youth how people of all racial, cultural, and even various religious backgrounds have something in common. Skin Deep helped one young lady to discover the beauty God sees in us beyond our surface appearance.

PASSways is an experience of a lifetime! If you missed the trip this year we hope you will join us next year! Registration will begin in October so keep your eyes on the calendar!
