Lent 2009

Posted on February 23rd, 2009

Lent is a forty-day period in our church calendar that is set aside for reflection and repentance.  Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism.  By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days.

Our church will also observe Lent as a communal preparation for Jesus’ journey to the cross on our behalf.  We invite you to worship with us during the season of Lent.  The following is a schedule of the themes of our services:

3/1           “Journeying with God” – Psalm 25:1-10

3/8           “Journeying with One Another” – Psalm 22:23-31

3/15         “Journeying in God’s Law” – Psalm 19

3/22         “Journeying with Thanks” – Psalm 107-1-3, 17-22

3/29         “Journeying with Clean and Open Hearts” – Psalm 51:1-12

4/5           “Journeying into Jerusalem” – Mark 11, 15

Also, the Farmville Area Ministerial Association invites you to attend their Wednesday Lenten Services at 12 noon followed by a free soup lunch at 12:30 p.m.  The following is a schedule of churches hosting these services:

Wed., March 4 – Farmville Presbyterian

Wed., March 11 – Farmville United Methodist

Wed., March 18 – Beulah African Methodist Episcopal

Wed., March 25 – Johns Memorial Episcopal

Wed., April 1 – St. Theresa Catholic

On Friday, April 10, Farmville Baptist will host a community-wide Good Friday Service at noon.  A soup lunch will be served after the service.

2/25 – Ash Wednesday Service

Posted on February 10th, 2009

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty days before Easter (excluding Sundays).  Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance and as a reminder of our mortality.

This year, we will have our Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, February 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, immediately after our Wednesday Night Soup Supper.  We invite you all to this worship service on February 25.

2/8 – Jeaninne Milne to Preach

Posted on February 2nd, 2009

Baptist Women in Ministry, a national organization that seeks to support and encourage women Baptist ministers, has designated February as the Martha Stearns Marshall Month of Preaching.  Marshall was an eighteenth-century Separate Baptist female preacher.  In her honor, Baptist churches are encouraged to invite a woman to preach and proclaim the word of God during a worship service in February.

To that end, we’ve invited Jeannine Milne, a member of Farmville Baptist and a graduate student at Longwood University, to be our preacher on Sunday, February 8.  Jeaninne recently has been sensing a call to attend seminary to prepare for congregational ministry.  Please pray for Jeaninne as you hear about her spiritual journey and her call to ministry!

Posted on January 19th, 2009

This past Sunday, we had a Dedication Service for Daniel and Melissa McLemore and their daughter, Ellie Grace, born April 28, 2008.

We were honored to have had many family members and friends of Daniel and Melissa attend the service.  It was a truly a family affair!

We give thanks to God for bringing this precious child, Ellie Grace, safely into the world, and we pray God’s blessings on Daniel and Melissa as they raise Ellie up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord!

Hanging of the Greens ’08

Posted on November 30th, 2008

Tonight, we had our annual Hanging of the Greens service at 6:00 p.m.  It was a wonderful service filled with music and singing.  Our bell choir, children’s choir, sanctuary choir, women’s ensemble and men’s ensemble led in the music, while the congregation joined in singing of Advent and Christmas carols.   Throughout the service, each age group of the church did their part in decorating the Sanctuary–from the hanging of the garlands and wreaths, to the lighting of the window candles, to the arrangement of the poinsettias, and the decorating of the Chrismon tree.  Eight scripture lessons were read that told the story of the prophecy, the promise and the fulfillment of the birth of Jesus.  This service was a wonderful way to begin the Advent season.  After the service, we all enjoyed cookies and punch in our fellowship hall.

Many thanks to our Music and Worship Committee for the organizing and planning of this service, and for our Social Committee for providing refreshments afterwards.

College Led Worship

Posted on November 23rd, 2008

This Sunday, over twenty Longwood students led our worship service. They played in a bell choir, sang in a quartet, played the piano and organ, led choruses as a worship team, read scripture, offered prayers, and gave the children’s lesson with a skit.  Senior Jordan Miles presented the message.

After the service, around sixty students enjoyed a luncheon in our fellowship hall.  Many thanks to Kerby Moore and the College Committee for organizing such a wonderful lunch!

What a blessing it is to have college students at our church, whether to join us in worship and to lead us in worship!

All Saints Sunday 2008

Posted on November 3rd, 2008

We celebrated All Saints Sunday yesterday in our morning worship service by giving thanks to God for the members of Farmville Baptist Church who have since gone on to be with their Lord.  But we also recognized and gave thanks for those still in our midst who have greatly contributed to the life of Farmville Baptist.  We formally recognized Cecil Yeatts as a new Life Deacon, and we presented five members of the church with our “Good and Faithful Servant” recognition: Jack Austin, Paul Cave, Howard Ferguson, Alma Lewis and Ruth Patteson.  These five individuals have given a combined 300 plus years of service to Farmville Baptist and to Christ’s Kingdom!  We thank God for them!  After the service, the congregation gathered for a covered dish fellowship in honor of these individuals.

Pictured above from left to right: Howard Ferguson, Ruth Patteson, Cecil Yeatts, Alma Lewis and Jack Austin.  Paul Cave was not able to attend the service as he is still recuperating from pneumonia.

“One in Christ” Concert

Posted on September 8th, 2008

On Saturday, September 6, we held our community-wide “One in Christ” Celebration Concert at 6 p.m. at Heritage Baptist Church. The sun was out amidst a clear blue sky that evening, which was a big relief, since the previous night and all morning, tropical storm Hannah dumped around four inches of rain in Farmville! Choirs and Praise Teams from five different churches–Heritage Baptist, Apostolic Faith Church of All Nations, First Baptist, Farmville Baptist and Zion Hill Baptist–performed songs to the delight of almost two hundred folks who were in attendance. After the concert, everyone enjoyed a free barbecue picnic supper.

Please visit the “One in Christ in Prince Edward County” website for pictures of the whole evening. For more pictures of our worship team performing . . . Read the rest of this entry »

9/28 – Consecration Sunday

Posted on August 26th, 2008

September is our Stewardship Emphasis month, and this year, our theme is “Reasons to be Grateful.” Throughout the month, members of our church will give reasons why they are grateful for God’s blessings in their lives and in our church.

This stewardship emphasis will reach its climax on “Consecration Sunday,” September 28, when we will turn in our estimate of giving cards to help support the ministry and mission of Farmville Baptist.

On that day, Dr. Daniel Bagby, Professor of Pastoral Care at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, will be our guest speaker during worship.

Immediately after worship, all members and guests are invited to a free catered luncheon held at the Gee Price Center of The Fuqua School. Please contact the church office (392-5041) to let us know that you’ll be coming for worship and lunch on September 28. Let’s all attend church that Sunday and make it a high attendance Sunday!
