On Sunday, March 25, over thirty Longwood and Hampden-Sydney students led in our worship service. Sarah Cave preached on “Faithful Sight” taken from Matthew 11:28-30 and Isaiah 41:10. Brittany Crowe shared her testimony. Zach Highland played the organ. “Pitch Perfect,” an acapella from Longwood provided the special music. Casey Garrett and Michael Crumpler gave the children’s lesson. Many others read litanies, read scripture, prayed, handed out bulletins, and collected the offering. After the service, a luncheon was served for the students and for their adoptive parents. It was a wonderful time of worship and fellowship!

Lent is a forty-day period in our church calendar that is set aside for reflection and repentance. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. For contemporary Christians, this is a season for prayer, penitence, and preparation for Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty days before Easter (excluding Sundays). Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance and as a reminder of our mortality.
This year, we will have our Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. All are invited to this service.

This Sunday, we had our “Hanging of the Greens” service, in which we decorated our sanctuary as part of our advent preparation. In the service, we had scripture readings that (fore)told the coming of Christ, interspersed with advent hymns and special music by our children, sanctuary and bell choirs. Celia Jo Young and her grandchildren lit our first Advent candle, and members both young and not-so-young participated in decorating the sanctuary.
