Back to School Event

Posted on August 6th, 2011

Farmville Baptist partnered with FACES (our local food pantry), the Youth Empowerment Center, and Minister Pamela LaRue to sponsor a Back-to-School event this morning to feed a hot breakfast to over fifty students and then escort them to the Youth Empowerment Center for a anti-bullying program. Afterwards, all the students received school supplies to help them with the beginning of school this Wednesday. This was truly a community effort!  The following churches and businesses contributed school supplies and back packs to this event: Apostolic Faith Church of All Nations, College Presbyterian Church, Farmville Baptist Church, Farmville United Methodist Church, Farmville Presbyterian Church, Hampden-Sydney College, Heritage Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant/Beulah/Mt. Harmony United Methodist Churches, Reclaiming Our Lives Ministry, St. James Orthodox Church and Wal-Mart.  We are so thankful that these churches and businesses partnered together to make this event possible!

Missions Awareness Sunday

Posted on April 25th, 2010

On April 25, we had a Missions Awareness Sunday in worship.  The following video of Reggie McNeal sharing at an “Unleashed” Conference was shown in the worship service.

Afterwards, attendees were invited to a Missions Fair in our Fellowship Hall.  At the fair, there were information booths and representatives from various local ministries, community services, and Farmville Baptist ministries to share with attendees on how they can get involved in ministry and service in our community. We served “fair food” like hot dogs, snacks, popcorn, cotton candy, etc.

Alma Hunt State Missions Offering

Posted on September 27th, 2009

Alma-Hunt-web-banner

In the month of October, Farmville Baptist will be having our Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions emphasis.  Our goal this year is to collect $1,000.00 for this offering.

Here is some information about this missions offering:

What is the Alma Hunt Emphasis for Virginia Missions?
The Alma Hunt Emphasis for Virginia Missions is a year-round expression of the mission spirit of Virginia Baptists.

Why is it called the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions?
Alma Hunt was a Virginia born, world renown Baptist leader, having served 26 years as WMU National Executive Director and after retirement as a national and international missions advocate. Until her death at age 98, her sacrificial service was an example for all Virginia Baptists to emulate. Thus, the State Missions Offering of Virginia was named in her honor in 1998.

What is this year’s theme and scripture?
The theme for 2009 is “TODAY,” based off of Luke 4:18-21:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them,’TODAY this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.’” (NIV)

What does the Alma Hunt Offering fund beyond my regular giving?
The Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions makes possible special ministries, outreach projects, and initiatives that are not funded through regular streams of giving but are uniquely connected to Virginia Baptists. These ministry allocations are determined annually for publication.

Who decides which ministries will be funded?
Since 1976 this offering has been a joint venture between Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia (WMUV) and the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV) with the development of an annual goal and allocation of funds under the direction of a Virginia Missions Committee. This committee is composed of equal representation from the WMUV Trustee Board and the BGAV Executive Board as appointed and elected.

BCM Missionaries Update

Posted on July 2nd, 2008

In April, we posted an article about three Baptist Collegiate Ministry students attending Farmville Baptist who were preparing to go on summer mission.  Last week, we received the following letter from Emily Caviness.

Dear friends and family,

I have returned safely back home to Virginia!  Thank you all for your prayers and financial support.  From when I first decided to go to Macau, I didn’t know how I would pay for the whole trip, but God took care of every worry or possible trouble.  Our team was able to teach English to 60 people while we were there, and we were able to hand out to restaurant workers 1,600 gifts inviting them to Macau Baptist Church.  Mainly, though, God used us to show his love simply by creating friendships with the people.  In Chinese, the phrase for “boring” literally translates in English to “talking about Jesus,” so it was a blessing to be able to show the people God’s light in a fun and personal way.
