College Led Worship

Posted on November 23rd, 2008

This Sunday, over twenty Longwood students led our worship service. They played in a bell choir, sang in a quartet, played the piano and organ, led choruses as a worship team, read scripture, offered prayers, and gave the children’s lesson with a skit.  Senior Jordan Miles presented the message.

After the service, around sixty students enjoyed a luncheon in our fellowship hall.  Many thanks to Kerby Moore and the College Committee for organizing such a wonderful lunch!

What a blessing it is to have college students at our church, whether to join us in worship and to lead us in worship!

Adopt-a-Student Cookout ‘08

Posted on September 15th, 2008

Yesterday, we had our Adopt-a-Student Cookout at the home of Kerby and Janet Moore.  We had a great turnout, and around 24 students were “adopted” by church members!  The crowd enjoyed great conversation and plenty of food!  It was a wonderful way to welcome our students back to Farmville Baptist.

Once again, many thanks to Kerby, Janet and Jewel Moore for inviting us to their home!

BCM Missionaries Update

Posted on July 2nd, 2008

In April, we posted an article about three Baptist Collegiate Ministry students attending Farmville Baptist who were preparing to go on summer mission.  Last week, we received the following letter from Emily Caviness.

Dear friends and family,

I have returned safely back home to Virginia!  Thank you all for your prayers and financial support.  From when I first decided to go to Macau, I didn’t know how I would pay for the whole trip, but God took care of every worry or possible trouble.  Our team was able to teach English to 60 people while we were there, and we were able to hand out to restaurant workers 1,600 gifts inviting them to Macau Baptist Church.  Mainly, though, God used us to show his love simply by creating friendships with the people.  In Chinese, the phrase for “boring” literally translates in English to “talking about Jesus,” so it was a blessing to be able to show the people God’s light in a fun and personal way. Last Sunday afternoon, we had nearly fifty children (in addition to their parents) in our front and back yards enjoying an Easter Egg Hunt. Many thanks to Amanda Johnston and our Children’s Committee for organizing the event. We had youth hiding the eggs, college students offering games and face painting, and parents bringing food. John Johnston grilled over one hundred hot dogs for everyone!

College-Led Worship Service

Posted on November 18th, 2007

This morning, we had over twenty Longwood University students lead in our worship service! They did an awesome job performing in a skit, giving a children’s lesson, signing during a hymn, ushering and taking up the offering, playing instruments, and leading prayers and readings. Jeannine Milne, a first-year Longwood graduate student, did a wonderful job with the message, sharing honestly and transparently about how she is thankful that God has been with her in her spiritual journey. At the end of the service, Cameron Patterson, a Longwood student, joined the church as a watchcare member.

After the service, the students enjoyed a home cooked meal in the Fellowship Hall. Many thanks to Linda Saxtan, Kerby Moore and the College Committee for hosting a wonderful lunch consisting of roast beef and gravy, meatloaf, butter beans, candied yams, creamed potatoes, rolls, drinks, dessert.

Truly, we had many things to be thankful for to God on this beautiful fall day!

Adopt-a-Student Cookout 2007

Posted on September 17th, 2007

Yesterday, we had an “adopt-a-student” cookout at the home of Kerby and Janet Moore. Thirteen Longwood students came and various members of the church “adopted” some of them to provide a home-away-from-home for the students. We had a great time reconnecting with returning students and we enjoyed getting to know the fresh(wo)men. Many thanks to Kerby and Janet for their hospitality. Thanks also to the members who have adopted students, but really, I think they will be the ones who will be blessed by the students!
