VBS 2009

On June 14-18, we held our “Crocodile Dock” Vacation Bible School. Over fifty children attended and learned about how God is with us, how God is powerful, how God does what he says he’ll do, how God gives us life, and God cares for us. The refrain for the week was “Fear Not!”  We also collected canned goods and $140.95 for FACES, our local food pantry.

Many thanks to Crystal Cupp and Sandy East for directing VBS this year. And once again, a word of appreciation also goes to all our adult and youth volunteers!

   This is my forth year attending VBS and as always I had a wonderful time. My favorite part was when they would act out the Bible Story.

   I am amazed after seeing the childrens production in Church, following the vacation bible school, and now seeing for the first time, the pictures of the different groups during bible school. Memories will last a lifetime. So much joy and happiness was very evident. God bless all who participated. Thank you one and all.

   Can you share with me how you did the FEAR NOT t shirts. We are doing them in 2 weeks and yours look AWESOME!

   Our craft person painstakingly cut out lots of sets of “FEAR NOT!” letters, though you might be able to find some stencil sets that would work. She cut them out of ordinary paper, I think — she cut out one for each kid in the biggest group that would visit the craft station. Then the kids taped the letters to their shirts (using loops of masking tape on the backs of the letters. I think the same masking tape loops lasted for several and maybe all the groups of kids). Then the kids put magazines or cardboard inside the t-shirts so that the paint wouldn’t bleed through. Then the kids got sponges and fabric paint on paper plates! The paint obviously got on the paper letters, which is OK. Just make sure the kids go thoroughly AROUND the letters so that the outline is clear on the t-shirt.

   When the kids were done, they carefully peeled off the letters and put them back on the table for the next kid at that place to use. Then they hung the t-shirts on an indoor clothesline. (If a kid used a LOT of paint, I think they kept some paper inside the shirt so that the paint wouldn’t bleed through while drying.)

   They did the craft on Day 3, I think, and on Day 4, they sent the dry t-shirts home so that the kids could wear them on Day 5. I think that Group’s craft guide has a similar set of instructions as a “supplemental craft idea” in the craft leader’s guide, but their instructions are more complicated (I think they suggest that kids splatter the paint with toothbrushes!!). They also suggest using glow-in-the-dark paint, which doesn’t show up very well on a white shirt. These instructions worked well. Thanks for the kind words — I’ll pass them on to the craft leaders!
