A Portrait of Thanksgiving

Posted on September 30th, 2007

FBC Group

This past Sunday, we culminated our stewardship emphasis by celebrating Consecration Sunday. We heard a challenging and encouraging sermon by Dr. Scott Spencer, New Testament professor at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. The congregation turned in “estimate of giving cards” as a way to partner with God in what God is doing in our congregation and our community. After the service, we took the picture above, and then over 120 people headed off to the Gee Price Center of the Fuqua School for a celebration luncheon. There, folks enjoyed a fine lunch and they saw a 14 minute slide show of church events that took place last year.  Then Ken Copeland, the chair of our stewardship emphasis committee, announced that based on what was pledged during the worship service, we can anticipate a 19% increase in our operating revenue for the coming year.  It was truly a day of celebration and thanksgiving for what God has done for us! Please click on the group picture above to see a much larger version of the portrait. Read the rest of this entry »

Adopt-a-Student Cookout 2007

Posted on September 17th, 2007

group.jpg

Yesterday, we had an “adopt-a-student” cookout at the home of Kerby and Janet Moore. Thirteen Longwood students came and various members of the church “adopted” some of them to provide a home-away-from-home for the students. We had a great time reconnecting with returning students and we enjoyed getting to know the fresh(wo)men. Many thanks to Kerby and Janet for their hospitality. Thanks also to the members who have adopted students, but really, I think they will be the ones who will be blessed by the students!

“A Portrait of Thanksgiving”

Posted on September 11th, 2007

Consecration Sunday, September 30, 2007

September is our Stewardship Emphasis month, and this year, our theme is “A Portrait of Thanksgiving.” Throughout the month, members of our church will give “snapshots” of how God has blessed them as individuals and us as a church.

This stewardship emphasis will reach its climax on “Consecration Sunday,” September 30, when we will turn in our estimate of giving cards to help support the ministry and mission of Farmville Baptist. On that day, Dr. F. Scott Spencer, Professor of New Testament at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, will be our guest speaker during worship. Immediately after worship, we will take a portrait of our whole congregation to be published in our pictorial directory. We want everyone to be in the picture! After the portrait, all members and guests are invited to a free catered luncheon held at the Gee Price Center of The Fuqua School. Let’s all attend church that Sunday and make September 30 a high attendance Sunday!

Very soon, letters will be mailed to members and regular attendees to give more details about our stewardship emphasis and Consecration Sunday. You will receive a call to remind you about Consecration Sunday and to RSVP for the luncheon. Please be in prayerful consideration in the coming weeks as you seek God’s guidance in your stewardship and participation in God’s work through the ministries of Farmville Baptist!

Tuesday Morning Bible Study, Fall 2007

Posted on September 3rd, 2007

yancey_grace_.jpgOur Tuesday morning Bible study will be studying Philip Yancey’s What’s So Amazing About Grace, starting Tuesday, September 4, 10:00 a.m. in the parlor.

Here is a review of the book by amazon.com:

The grace of which Philip Yancey writes is the freely given and unmerited favor and love of God. This grace seems a remote, almost sentimental concept, without a place in our lives or our society. It is a vague, slippery thing to us, probably because we seem to experience grace so rarely and have managed to leech the word of meaning. But Philip Yancey has set about to rescue grace in his book What’s So Amazing About Grace?

This grace is the true message of Jesus. All faiths have virtues and creeds and justice and truth, but Jesus speaks merely of receiving the love that God has for us. Accepting it, not earning it or making ourselves worthy of it. And frankly, accepting something we have not earned or are not worthy of is not an easy thing for most of us.

In truth, grace is both utterly simple and utterly confounding. Little by little, Yancey guides us into a clearer understanding of grace by using stories, in much the same way Jesus did. We read stories of both grace and ungrace at work in people’s lives. Sadly, it is stories of ungrace that are more prevalent today, the current culture wars painful acknowledgments of ungrace in our lives as Christians in this country. Yancey helps us understand that ungrace is that state of being in which self-righteousness and pride are a result of thinking that we have somehow earned God’s approval and may now stand in judgment in his behalf.

Philip Yancey was awarded the Gold Medallion Christian Book of the Year award for this book in 1998 by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association.
